Caverns in San Antonio, TX

Cascade Caverns Boerne, TX

My cousin from the Bay Area found this cave on Google, and he wanted to check it while visiting me in Austin last weekend. It’s located North West of San Antonio, TX in a town called Boerne. Think “Jason Bourne” from the movie but spelled differently.

Remember the movie “Batman Begins” with Christian Bale? Well, these caverns remind me a lot of the film. You walk down several flights of concrete stairs into basically Earth and the sun begins to diminish. Once inside, little bats the size of a golf-ball are hanging upside down about 12 inches from your head. Talk about an experience!

Tickets are $20 for adults and $13 for kids under 12. We finished the tour in about an hour. One thing I will recommend is wearing shoes that can get wet. The whole duration of the tour you’ll be walking through puddles of water and it’s slippery at times.

The drive from Austin into Boerne is about an hour and a half. The drive is windy at times and reminds me of a “Jeepers Creepers” movie because no other cars are on the road for those 90 minutes. It’s full of country back-roads, so the fear of hitting a deer is definitely there.

I found out that Cascade Caverns is a fully sized campground for up to 75 cars to park. Good to know for this upcoming Summer. Each campsite includes a bonfire pit for your use.

Enjoy!
